The Provincial Council of Gipuzkoa and Elhuyar Fundazioa sign agreement to study the possibility of a research center for the language industry

The General Deputy of Gipuzkoa, Markel Olano and Elhuyar Fundazioa's president, Jose Maria Rodriguez have signed an agreement to collaborate on a project that will analyze the feasibility of the move towards a research center for the language industry.

Through the Anti-Crisis Plan 2011, the Provincial Council of Gipuzkoa makes a contribution of 150,000 euros for Elhuyar Fundazioa to progress in the above study and promote, among others, research and development of technology in language processing.

Elhuyar Fundazioa's project will be based on the following key features:

  • Feasibility analysis of the evolution towards a research center for the language industry.
  • Reflection and analysis of the development of advanced linguistic resources based on the needs of society, to strengthen the language industry sector.
  • Promoting the task of integration of information technology and communication in society and, especially, promoting research, development and technological innovation in the field of computer resources for language processing.
  • Critical review of the deepening and improvement of Elhuyar Fundazioa's commitment to Basque and Gipuzkoan society with respect to scientific knowledge and greater standardization of Euskera.

The County Council has described this as a "strategic project" for Gipuzkoa and in this sense, the deputy general of Gipuzkoa, Markel Olano said "this is a key initiative for the country and to develop our own identity from the moment which includes the promotion of Basque, research and innovation of language, and the inevitable and necessary internationalization of it. "

Elhuyar Fundazioa performs a unique activity and acts as an agent for the standardization and development of Basque, added Olano. It is recalled that in the field of language technologies it has enabled the development and promotion of strategic R & D projects, has promoted the dissemination of research results and has carried out  transfer and commercialization of tools and linguistic resources, promoting language development both internationally and in terms of multilingual contexts.
